Security standards and card acceptance: Making it all clear

Protect your card data. In addition to stealing customer data, nowadays the theft of card data is also a favourite activity of attackers. Stolen and improperly used card data result in major inconveniences for all concerned. In addition to the financial loss, affected companies often suffer significant damage to their reputation.

In response to the steady increase in such cases, the leading card organisations (Visa, MasterCard, JCB, Diners Club Card/Discover Card) have introduced a number of different security standards. The goal of these standards is to effectively safeguard all of those involved (merchants, service providers, cardholders, etc.) from the negative consequences of card data theft.

It is the responsibility of every company that processes, transfers and/or stores card data to comply with the standards. However, acquirers such as SIX Multipay are obligated to the card organisations to ensure that the standards are complied with and implemented.

PCI standards

PCI DSS

The PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) is the uniform security standard for card data that applies around the world. The security guidelines defined in this standard define the minimum protection of card data during processing, transfer and storage.

PCI PTS

PCI PTS (PIN Transaction Security) deals with security for PIN-based transactions. The focus here is on payment devices and the manufacturers of such devices.

PA-DSS

The PA-DSS (Payment Application Data Security Standard) concerns security for everything related to payment applications. The concept of payment applications includes, for instance, software that performs the function of a payment device.

Secure card acceptance

Presence payment – the purchaser is with you at your business location

In the case of classic presence business in which the customer and the card are at the business location for the payment, merchants bear the least amount of risk. This is because they notice conspicuous behaviour and are able respond immediately.

Over the Internet/over the phone – the purchaser is not at the point of sale

More and more people are ordering their food over the phone or choosing their SmartPhone with a click of the mouse, since doing so is a time-saving luxury. As a merchant, stay “up-to-date” in the area of home shopping.

EMV chip technology

«Quicker», «more secure», «more reliable», «future-oriented». These are the attributes of the new EMV chip technology. But what is it and what exactly does it do?
